The annual Thanksgiving Potluck Dinner is on Tuesday, November 22, 6:30 – 8:30 pm at Skillman Church of Christ (3014 Skillman St.).

Everyone is invited, the turkey and ham will be provided, please bring your choice of Thanksgiving side dish or dessert in a disposable container. We are requesting donations of canned food for the North Texas Food Bank.

Pumpkin Carving & Decorating for all ages: We clean out the pumpkins before the kids arrive for good, clean carving fun! (Kids must be accompanied by an adult).

Chili Cook-off & Cookie Bake-off: Cook up a big batch of your personal chili (in a crock pot or other heated pot) and/or your favorite homemade cookies for a chance to win fun prizes for best in the neighborhood!

Everyone gets to taste & judge: Arrive with your entries at 11am. Results determined at 1:30pm. There will be prizes for Best All-around, 2nd place, & “Most Creative” for both food categories– not to mention BRAGGING RIGHTS!

Volunteers are needed to help prepare pumpkins on the Friday night before the event, as well as set up and clean up day of.

The Dallas Police Department will have officers on hand to discuss crime watch type concerns as well as exhibits from local charitable organizations. We will have hotdogs and hamburgers provided by Skillman Church of Christ, a bounce house sponsored by the YMCA and the pie-eating contest will be back! We will also feature live music provided by Munger Place UMC.

The Carter Bloodmobile will be there as well. We need to get 20 people to donate blood to make it worth their trip, so come on out and give blood. There will also be face painting, on-site pet microchipping, and free key cutting.

This is a great opportunity to have some fun, meet your neighbors and learn something new about your community. We’ll see you there!

The October 8 show features professional percussionist Rev. Rob Leischner. Admission is free, but a collection will be taken during the concert. Donations of school and art supplies will also be accepted, and will be delivered to the Guatemalan children the following week.

We all know we should have a plan but the reality is most of us don’t. On Thursday, September 29 starting at 6:30 p.m. Cassandra Wallace from the Dallas Office of Emergency Management will give a presentation on how to prepare your household for the worst case scenario.

Ms. Wallace will also provide information on how you can become a part of CERT, the Community Emergency Response Team. CERT training promotes a partnering between the citizens of Dallas, the Office of Emergency Management, Dallas Fire Rescue, and the Dallas Police Department. Emergency personnel train members of neighborhoods, community organizations, and businesses to assist if an event overwhelms or delays the community’s professional response. If we have enough volunteers, we can arrange for a custom class that’s designed around our schedule.

We have invited State Rep Ken Sheets and State Rep Dan Branch to spend time discussing the latest developments in Austin that may affect our city and neighborhood. You may have heard that the state will be going through a redistricting exercise before the next election. So come out and meet our current and future state representatives.

This is a joint meeting with Lower Greenville Neighborhood Association so feel free to invite your friends from all over the city. Our friends from Skillman Church of Christ are hosting the meeting in the Rotunda room. See you there!

The SPCA of Texas offers some important reminders on the extra care you must take to help your pet avoid heatstroke.

• Do not leave pets in the car! Even with the windows down, the temperature of a car may reach 120 degrees in 10 minutes on an 85 degree day.
• Make sure to provide adequate shade and water for outside pets.
• Filling a kids’ swimming pool for your pet to cool off in.
• Tie a tarp between trees or of the back porch to provide extra shade.
• Keep your pet in good physical condition and avoid heavy exercise in the hot weather.
• Walk your pet early in the morning or late in the evening.
• Play games indoors with your pet.

Is your pet suffering from heatstroke? If your pet seems listless, is panting or his breathing is labored, collapses, has glazed eyes, he/she may be suffering from heatstroke.
How can heatstroke be treated? Immerse the pet in cold water if possible, or wrap the pet in wet towels. Apply ice packs to the head and neck. Make every effort to cool the pet down quickly. Your pet may also be dehydrated. If you suspect your pet has heatstroke, contact your veterinarian immediately.

1. Don’t leave cat or dog food outside overnight.
2. Don’t leave birdseed in feeders or on the ground overnight.
3. Don’t put unsecured garbage outside at night.
4. Cover crawl spaces and attics with heavy gauge, rustproof wire mesh (not chicken wire).
5. Inspect your eaves and other areas where the roof and house join. Repair deteriorating boards, warped siding and loose shingles.
6. Trim overhanging branches that provide easy access to your roof for squirrels and other wildlife.
7. If you have a pet door, close it at night and cover the entrance
8. If you have a chimney, make sure you have a secure cap. Raccoons look for open spaces to give birth.
9. If you have a deck, you can prevent animals from digging underneath it by creating an L-shaped barrier. Attach heavy gauge wire mesh to the base of the deck, sink it six inches into the ground, bend it 90 degrees away from the deck for 12 inches and then cover it with soil.
