What’s the value of membership in the Lakewood Heights Neighborhood (LHNA) Association?
Your membership certainly represents more than just the check you write. Your annual household membership supports our many initiatives, services, and activities listed below that benefit each of us – sometimes in ways you may not even be aware. And, most importantly, your active participation helps to ensure the vitality, strength, safety, and success of our neighborhood. WE NEED YOU – and your enthusiasm, ideas, creativity, and concern, and action!
· The Lakewood Heights Neighborhood Association represents YOU! Throughout the year, LHNA officers and street reps are your direct connection to City Hall and the Dallas Police. They reinforce your own reporting of problems, often contacting department heads and council members directly to get action. Your annual membership dues help to cover neighborhood participation in the Dallas Homeowners League. Officers attend the DHL meetings and Boot Camp workshops to keep abreast of city-wide neighborhood issues and causes, and to gain info and techniques for running the neighborhood and interacting with city departments. Through the work of the Association, Lakewood Heights enjoys a history of having a strong relationship and voice at City Hall and in making things happen for the neighborhood!
· The Heights Herald Newsletter – Written and published by LHNA, the newsletter is delivered to every residence in Lakewood Heights – we number about 1200! This is a big job! Your street representative and/or block captain hand-delivers this to your doorstep. The quarterly newsletter brings you news and updates regarding events, park updates, code issues, crime watch concerns and prevention, health & nutrition topics, gardening advise, local school issues, and general neighborhood news. Costs are paid by your dues and advertisements. We encourage topics for articles and appreciate all volunteers who deliver the newsletter and offer advertising support!
· LHNA Website – The website is kept current with the latest newsletter, hot topics, and great links to City of Dallas web pages. We hope to expand the website service by building our own website, but funding is needed to cover costs, and volunteers are needed to create it!
· Quarterly General Meetings of LHNA Members – A great way to meet your neighbors and share ideas and concerns! Hear guest speakers and gain valuable information!
· Monthly Board Meetings – includes the Officers, your Street Captains, committee leaders, and any interested member to discuss and solve issues that arise, as well as plan events and programs.
· LHNA Email Contact List – A special benefit of membership! Our Email Network sends you current updates between newsletter deliveries about events, news, crime watches, and emergencies.
· Tietze Park Recycling bins – The cans and glass that you can conveniently deposit at the bins at Tietze Park not only help to minimize such waste in our landfills, but LHNA gets a portion of the proceeds to benefit neighborhood endeavors, including helping to support The Friends of Tietze Park. In fact, this has been determined as THE MOST SUCCESSFUL neighborhood recycling effort in Dallas! So take your cans and glass to TIETZE and help support our efforts there!
· Alley Rally – When alley conditions merit, this event, usually held in April, organizes teams of alley clean-up crews down all of our alleys. While one of the messiest jobs we do, it certainly helps neighbors do their jobs in keeping the alleys cleaner and free of debris to aid police patrolling in our alleys.
· Front Yard Picnics – Organized by the Events and Crime Watch Committees and your Street reps. Through LHNA funds and donations, each of the streets host a front yard picnic to bring neighbors together for a fun evening of treats and getting to know each other. Hundreds of neighbors have enjoyed the picnics since just 2004, when they were first organized! Get your street involved this year!
· Pumpkins in the Park – October celebration and picnic in Tietze Park. Growing and more popular every year! Along with your membership dues, the raffle and donations from area merchants help defer the costs of the pumpkins, food, decorations, and activities for the kids. We also conduct our October General Meeting during the picnic and have guest speakers each year.
· Tietze Park Spruce Up – City park maintenance crews do a pretty good job in keeping the park in shape, but they are spread thin with fewer dollars every year. Tietze Park is the gem of the neighborhood and we want to keep it in its best condition! A cooperative effort with Friends of Tietze Park and often held in November, this event brings park lovers together to help with clean-up and maintenance, including: pick-up of leaves and acorns (and there are LOTS), debris, graffiti, minor repairs, and painting. November bulb planting with local Girl Scouts troops also has been a part of the fun in recent years. LHNA also works very closely with the Friends of Tietze Park Foundation!
· Neighborhood Outreach Program – Partnering with nearby organizations, churches, and businesses, this initiative seeks to provide volunteer opportunities to benefit the neighbors most in need, as well as work with local groups to help others.
· Emergency Preparedness - In June 2002, Lakewood Heights became the first neighborhood in Dallas designated by the American Red Cross as “Disaster Resistant”. One of the results of that was a Neighborhood Disaster Plan. The plan includes a neighborhood hazard analysis, information on family planning and resources, organization, training, and emergency notifications.
· Community Thanksgiving Potluck Dinner – Held at Skillman Church of Christ, this is a wonderful evening of neighbors coming together to celebrate Thanksgiving and our close ties with each other!
